Prison farms are nightmarish facilities that force incarcerated people to abuse animals for profit.

On this AJA Lunchtime Live, we'll find out about two groups who are working to dismantle these highly problematic prison animal farm programs.

We have Calvin Neufeld of Evolve Our Prison Farms joining us to share their new report exposing the Correctional Service of Canada’s planned program to have prisoners intensively farming cows and thousands of goats to produce milk for export to China... all of which is in violation of human rights and trade laws.

We'll also have Onyx Helper from The Raven Corps telling us about their new OP: 13 campaign boycotting corporations that source labor and products from U.S. prison farms.

We'll discuss not only how there's no rehabilitative value for prisoners working in these factory farms, but the serious harm they're doing to prisoners, animals, the environment, and surrounding communities. We'll also explore what we can do to help.

About Our Guests: 

Calvin Neufeld is a full-time social justice advocate, writer, and researcher. In 2016, Calvin founded Evolve Our Prison Farms, a campaign to protect against the exploitation of animals and incarcerated persons in Canada’s new prison farm program. Through investigative research and the publication of reports, Evolve has been instrumental in interrupting the Correctional Service of Canada’s establishment of an intensive goat dairy operation, closing Canada’s last prison abattoir, and exposing the Canadian government’s plan to use prison farms to produce milk for domestic and international dairy markets.

Prior to founding Evolve, Calvin worked as a legal researcher, and as an executive assistant with the former Ontario Ministry of Research and Innovation. In the 2021 federal election, Calvin ran as the Green Party candidate for the riding of Lanark-Frontenac-Kingston, where Canada’s new prison farm program is located. Calvin lives with his wife and 11-year-old son in Perth, Ontario.

Onyx Helper is a youth activist working as The Raven Corps' Campaign Coordinator. They have been vegan for four years and an activist for two. Onyx's major focuses as an activist are animal liberation efforts, but they are also quite active in human liberation struggles such as the Palestinian liberation movement. They are currently studying philosophy at SUNY Cortland, but you can also catch Onyx at a local fur protest!
