ANIMAL JUSTICE ACADEMY LUNCHTIME LIVE:
Elwood's Organic Dog Meat & Satire in Activism
Last summer Molly Elwood and her husband came up with a wild idea for a digital activism project: Elwood's Organic Dog Meat -- a fictional farm that raises dogs for meat with claims of the dog meat being “local,” “organic,” “free-range,” and offering top quality canine meat.
The idea was to parody the language and messaging we see constantly coming out of the meat industry, and encourage people to explore their speciesism around which animals they protect and which animals they eat.
This project has since blown UP. They already have 40,000 followers on social media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter), with one viral post reaching 9.8 million people. The webpage, that finally lets people in on the joke, has over a million unique views.
In this AJA Lunchtime Live, we'll talk to Molly about the dramatic and sometimes hilarious reactions to Elwood's Organic Dog Meat, why she feels satire can be such an effective tool in animal advocacy, and where the project is heading.
*We invite folks to have their video on during this event to enhance the sense of community, but it’s not mandatory
About Molly Elwood:
Molly Elwood is a copywriter in the U.S. and has spent the last ten years creating content for major brands. Molly is also the creator of the vegan activist website, Elwood’s Organic Dog Meat which launched in August 2021. This fictional farm raises dogs for meat and dairy (and, inexplicably, eggs) with claims being “local,” “organic,” “free-range" and "ethical." The idea was to parody the meat industry's messaging, encouraging folks to explore their cognitive dissonance around the animals they choose to put on their plates. Today, the website, ElwoodDogMeat.com, has over a million unique views. The Facebook page has over 42k followers (one viral post has reached nearly 10M people & has 21k comments and 42k shares). Elwood’s shares comments and DMs from people who've said that this page has either made them vegetarian, consider veganism, or actually go vegan.
