Put Animals on the Ballot in the Federal Election
Animal Justice Workshop
With Camille Labchuk & Franz Hartmann
12pm - 1pm

Join Animal Justice Executive Director Camille Labchuk, political outreach veteran Franz Hartmann, and Animal Justice Academy Director Kimberly Carroll for a power-packed workshop on how to ensure animal protection is part of the conversation in this federal election.

With tariff and annexation threats dominating this federal election campaign, it’s up to us to make sure animals aren’t left off the political agenda. This next month is crucial for laying the groundwork for real progress on animal issues in the next Parliament.

In this nuts-and-bolts session, we’ll explore:

  • Canvassing or donating strategically to build influence with local candidates
  • Asking a question about animal issues at local candidates debates
  • Voting smart: how to find out where candidates and parties really stand on animal protection
  • Questions and talking points for when candidates come knocking

Elections are a powerful moment to speak up for animals. Join us and find out how to make your voice—and theirs—count.

*We invite folks to have their video on during this event to enhance the sense of community, but it’s not mandatory

About Our Guests:

Camille Labchuk is one of Canada’s leading animal rights lawyers, and executive director of Animal Justice—Canada’s only animal law advocacy organization, and has worked to protect animals for over 15 years. As a lawyer, Camille seeks out cases that enhance the legal interests of animals, expose hidden animal suffering, and result in meaningful policy changes. As an advocate, Camille’s work includes documenting the commercial seal kill on Canada’s East Coast, exposing cruelty in farming, protecting the free speech rights of animal advocates, and campaigns against ag gag laws, trophy hunting, circuses, zoos, aquariums, shark finning, puppy mills, and more. Camille is a graduate of the University of Toronto Faculty of Law and Mount Allison University. She is a frequent lecturer and media commentator on animal law issues. Camille lives in Toronto with her cat, Cecily.

Franz Hartmann has over 25 years experience as an environmental activist, building alliances and in government relations. He is the Coordinator of the Alliance for a Liveable Ontario. He was the Executive Director of the Toronto Environmental Alliance (TEA) for eleven years and helped create public support for many environmental policies at Toronto City Hall. Before then he was the Environmental Advisor to City Councillor Jack Layton and oversaw Jack’s civil society engagement activities on Parliament Hill. Franz has taught numerous environmental policies courses at the University of Toronto and is regularly asked to deliver lectures and talks across Ontario. Franz has a PhD in Political Science at York University.

Kimberly Carroll (Host) is a coach for changemakers, campaigns strategist with Animal Justice, director of Animal Justice Academy, and a director with the Toronto Vegetarian Food Bank. She brings her strategic and bridge-building skills as a coach and extensive media background from her career as a television host and producer to advocating for animal rights. She co-created the original “Why love one but eat the other?” transit ad campaign in Canada and was one of the founders of Mercy For Animals Canada — helping bring the first undercover farmed animal investigations to Canadian television. As a coach/teacher, Kimberly has help empower thousands of activists and counselled those in high-stress activist positions like undercover investigators and non-profit leaders. She’s also passionate about environmental activism, democratic reform, anti-poverty initiatives, and Indigenous rights.
